Why take a Pranayama Training?

Prāṇāyāma is often translated as “yogic breathwork” or “breath control.” But as we’ll explore together, it is MUCH more than that.
Before yogis practiced what we now call yoga (poses and movement), the central “physical” yoga was prāṇāyāma. Yoga, as it's generally referred to now, came much later.
Over time, the understanding of yogic breathwork expanded beyond the physical body and into something much more subtle, often referred to as the subtle body. So by practicing prāṇāyāma, we not only manipulate the breath but also work with our own life force energy.

Prāṇāyāma also has a profound effect on meditation. It helps to settle the mind and, in many traditions, is considered meditation itself. Breath becomes the bridge between body and mind, between effort and ease, between the tangible and the subtle.
Over these four weeks, we won’t just talk about these ideas; we will practice them. Together we’ll cultivate a deeper relationship to the breath, explore foundational techniques that calm and focus the mind, and gradually work with the subtler dimensions of the breath.
We are not just teachers of prāṇāyāma; we are also daily practitioners. These practices have shaped our meditation and deepened our understanding of subtle energy in ways that continue to unfold. It feels meaningful to share them with our community within this intentional container.
The main content sessions of the training will be on Sundays, March 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th, from 1pm-4pm in-person at Sama Studio, live online, and recorded. There will also be midweek virtual integration sessions, which will include discussion and practice, live and recorded, on Thursdays, March 12th, March 19th, and March 26th from 7:30-8:30pm.
We can’t wait to share this practice with you. Click here to read more and register.
